Online Digital & Operational Excellence Network Event - 23rd June 2022

We would like to start by thanking those who attended the Operational Excellence & Digital Network on the 23rd June 2022. It was unfortunate we didn’t get to meet you in person but it enabled us to double the number of attendees through our online event. It was great to see such a fantastic turnout and we are grateful for your contributions and also to our presenters for providing their time and sharing their transformational journeys and their learning from their experiences.

A number of sli.do questions were presented throughout the event. A summary of your responses relevant to each presentation topic were as follows:

In relation to automation, you demonstrated you are utilising a diverse range of automations tools across a range of functions such as HR, Purchase 2 Pay and Financial Accounting & Reporting functions mainly around KPI Reporting and to a lesser extent in Customer Service and Query Resolution. A number of key benefits highlighted were removing low level non-value-added tasks for your staff, improving consistency, accuracy and quality of data.

We then explored where our members were in their transformation journey with 58% of attendees at the Design Stage. Some very insightful feedback was shared when asked about key learning points from your transformational journey such as; Data quality needs be reliable and need to know how to get the most out of the tools you have before investing in anything new, Listening to what has or hasn't worked previously in other systems and Every transformation is different.

The final sli.do topic was in relation to Continuous Improvement (CI) in GBS/Shared Service environments. The results highlighted 52% of the attendees have a CI program, serving GBS/SS only but an encouraging result of 74% responded that GBS/SS encourage opportunities to participate in CI projects. Another encouraging finding was that 70% of your GBS/SS employees are trained in CI methodologies which greatly assists with the implementation of business change projects.

We had three great member contributions from Cadent Gas on Automation Tools, UK Shared Business Services on their Transformation journey and Hackett Group on Continuous Improvement Tools and methodologies.

Cadent Gas

Michael Gleeson and Rix Patel presented their data transformation journey and automation tools and included an interactive demonstration on what they have achieved.  Amazing insights on:

  • Innovation
  • Ideas
  • Technology
  • Why they need to transform
  • Target operation models
  • Key organisational development principals
  • Behaviours and cultures
  • What is coming next
  • The Hackett Group's measurement methodology for Digital World Class performance
  • Shared insights on the evolution of continuous improvement
  • Focussing on customer experience
  • Effectiveness and efficiency.

They discussed a range of processes for defining their projects and discussed a selection of examples from smaller initiatives such as the ‘room booking app’ right up to centralisation of all their data utilising Power BI to create a wide range of informative reports across a diverse range of functions. The key advantages of this enables Cadent Gas to understand their data, look at opportunities for improvements and created a more joined up system reducing bureaucracy and duplication. The Chairs particularly liked the ‘Dragons Den’ initiative which provides the opportunity to all its staff to present their ideas/proposal for change. This was a good example of inclusivity of staff in the change. Members asked really valuable questions of the presenters and from the positive feedback members really enjoyed the interactive demo which was presented.
